Starlett Carter received her Bachelors of Business Administration with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 2003. Mrs. Carter then received her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 2006.
In 2006, Mrs. Carter began her legal career in the Dallas office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP where she developed her practice in corporate/business law. In April 2014, Mrs. Carter made a lateral move with about 30 other attorneys from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP to the Dallas office of her current law firm, Sidley Austin LLP, a large international law firm.
Mrs. Carter’s practice includes drafting, revising, negotiating and interpreting complicated contracts and advising private equity firms and public companies in connection with acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures. Additionally, Mrs. Carter counsels clients with respect to general corporate governance and restructuring matters.
Mrs. Carter has also advised clients on corporate investigations in connection with both business litigation and internal investigations for special board committees of large public companies which involve interviewing relevant witnesses and reviewing documents to determine the facts underlying certain allegations. In addition to Mrs. Carter’s corporate practice, Starlett has successfully provided representation on a number of pro bono matters, which include cases involving divorce, guardianship, name change, asylum, contract dispute, criminal expungement, adoption, and landlord-tenant dispute.
Mrs. Carter has been recognized for her corporate practice by her inclusion in the 2016 Texas Rising Stars list and her inclusion in the 2013 Lawyers of Color Hot List, a selection of early-to-mid career minority attorneys from the southwest region, as well as the 2012 40 under 40 list by Dallas Furniture Bank for her professional achievements and civic efforts. Mr. Carter also serves as a board member of Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, a non-profit organization that provides free civil legal services to eligible low-income residents in Texas.
